I think New York will.....Look like a city with a big green rectangle. It will feel like a big city. It will smell like petrol fumes. It will taste like Pizza. It will sound like a lot of chaos. When I am there I may feel excited. I may also feel nervous. The activity that I am most looking forward to is the 911 museum, I am most worried about losing things. The part of the trip that may be the most rewarding will be being away from my parents. The part that may be most challenging will be having to be organised. In order to go on this trip I have done a bunch of jobs about the place to raise money. I think I will learn a lot about myself. What is Harlem and Hip hop (culture) and how is it relevent to art? Harlem - What is it? It’s a large neighbourhood in the northern section of the borough of Manhattan. Originally a Dutch village established in 1658 (named after Haarlem in Netherlands). African- American residents started to arrive in 1905 as part of the Great Migration. In the 1920s and 1930s there was an outpouring of artistic work resulting in the “Harlem Renaissance”. Following the Great Depression and WW2 there was a lot of crime and poverty. It then became a major African-American business hub, then in the late 20th century more affluent residents moved in bringing new wealth. Why is it famous? It is famous for the Harlem Renaissance which was a result of work from musicians, writers and actors. The Apollo Theatre opened in 1934 and can be found on 125th Street. The Savoy Ballroom was renowned for swing dancing and features in “stomping at the savoy”. 125 entertainment places operated in central Harlem at the time. 133rdstreet was also known as “swing street” and was dubbed “jungle alley” due to racial mingling during the Prohibition era. Some jazz venues were white only e.g. cotton club, and others were integrated e.g. the Savoy Ballroom. In 1936 Orson Wells produced his black Macbeth at the Lafayette Theatre. The Harlem Boys Choir ran from 1965-2007, it was a choir and education programme for young boys, mainly black.Harlem is home to the largest African American day parade held every September. The Dance Theatre of Harlem is a theatre school where generations of theatre artists have trained. Many Harlem artists contributed to Hip Hop, including Big L, Kurtis Blow and Immortal Technique. It is also the origin of popular Hip Hop dances e.g. Harlem shake (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYmS6n9k7Bk). A new way of playing the piano called the Harlem Stride style was created during the Renaissance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tGQ6DfG3Tw Fashion- during the renaissance, black Americans clothing went from prim and proper to extreme versions of the current white fashions. What’s happening now? Many affluent residents are moving in due to gentrification. There was a “sit in” protest against a 5-day-a-week farmers market in 2013. There are many dining hotspots popping up today. Tourists visit the many historic sites and also the new shops, music halls and restaurants. Hip HopWhat is it? This is a cultural movement developed in the Bronx in the late 70s. Many people think of it as hip hop music (rap) but it actually has 9 elements, with 4 main ones: 1. rapping (MC’ing)- rhythmic vocal rhyming style 2. DJ’ing- making music from record players and turntable mixers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6pSqO0JGDA– last 5 seconds mainly 3. breakdancing (b-boying and b-girling) 4. graffiti art. All 9 are: 1. Breakin 2. MC’ing 3. Graffiti Art 4. Dj’ing 5. Beat Boxin 6. Street Fashion 7. Street Language 8. Street Knowledge 9. Street Entrepreneurialism History of Hip Hop It originated from Block parties (like a street party) thrown by The Black Spades (mostly African-American street gang which started in the Bronx during the late 1960s and gained popularity in the 1970s.). Keith “cowboy” Wiggins (member of Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five) gave it the name on 1978. Afrika Bambaataa is an American DJ who released electro tracks in the 1980s that influenced the development of hip hop culture. He is one of the originators of breakbeat DJ’ing and is respectfully known as "The Godfather”. He encouraged the street gang the Black Spades into the Universal Zulu Nation, (an international hip hop awareness group) he has helped spread hip hop culture throughout the world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVTTph1nZPw

I think New York will....Look Like a large, overcrowded city. It will feel full of excitement and big. It will smell like gas fumes and hot dogs. It will taste like fatty foods. It will sound like loud, busy voices and transportation. When I am there I may feel excited. I may also feel squashed. The activity that I am most looking forward to is the ball game and the visit to Ross School. I am most worried about sleeping and the arrangements. The part of the trip that may be the most rewarding will be knowing that I can look after my passport and can travel without parents. The part that may be most challenging will be not having my parents or siblings with me for a change. In order to go on this trip I have worked in the pharmacy and also tried really hard to get good grades to prove I deserve to go. I think I will learn lots about myself. MoMA - The Museum of Modern ArtMoMA is a museum with a collection of some of the most impressive art pieces from around the world. Art pieces from artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo and many more famous artists. The founders, 3 patrons of art, wanted a new type of museum devoted to modern art so that the public could enjoy and understand the view of modern artwork. The artwork within the museum is changed every now and then so the artwork is influential and captures the idea of moving forward and change. However there are a few permanent pieces within the museum. The museum was founded in 1929 with the mission of “encouraging and developing the study of modern arts”. The museum also offers classes on the site to be able to learn new perspectives and you even get to create your own artwork alongside artists FUN FACTS: -MoMA began with only 6 rooms in 1929 however its popularity was a huge success and in 2004 it had 630,000 square feet. -MoMA’s original collection had only included 9 pieces, but nowadays 70,000 artists are represented by the exhibitions. -In a year, 3 million people visit MoMA and most people spend a full day in the museum, some would even spend a couple of days in the museum. -MoMA is definitely a top tourist attraction and highly worth a visit, even if you are not a huge fan of art and know nothing about it. I think New York will.......Look like a buzzing city full of people. It will feel like a new experience to be travelling with my peers. It will smell like car fumes, rubbish and street food. It will taste similar to home. It will sound like American accents. When I am there I may feel nervous to be away from home for a long time but I am looking forward to seeing New York from a different perspective. I may also feel excited to be travelling with my peers. The activity that I am most looking forward to is the 911 Museum or the fourth of July fireworks display, also arriving in New York and experiencing a completely different environment. I am most worried about missing my family too much. The part of the trip that may be the most rewarding will be finally getting to the destination. The part that may be most challenging will be leaving my family at home. In order to go on this trip I have to build my confidence. I think I will learn to be more independent and confident in myself. Ellis Island
Ellis Island, was the gateway for over 12 million immigrants to the U.S as the United States busiest inspection station for over 60 years from 1892 until 1954. Ellis Island was opened January 1st, 1892. The island was greatly expanded with land reclamation between 1892 and 1934. Before that, the much smaller original island was the site of Fort Gibson and later a naval magazine. The island was made part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965 and has hosted a museum of immigration since 1990. Extra Information From 1892 until 1954 Ellis Island was the busiest immigration station in the United States. It is located in Upper New York Bay and although most of the island is located in New Jersey, some of it is located in New York’s boundaries as well. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area provided a major food source for the Lenape as there were vast oyster banks in Upper New York Bay. The Dutch arrived, and Ellis, Liberty and Black Tom Islands were originally called ‘Oyster Islands’. Ellis Island had several names before it was acquired by Sam Ellis during the American Revolution. The island was leased in 1794, and eventually it was ceded to the U.S in 1808. It served as a military post until it became an immigration station. Quick Facts
